Named a World Heritage site, this mile-high city was built in a steep mountain valley and its narrow, winding streets may make you want to trade your car for a burro. Still, this labyrinthine layout is what gives Guanajuato much of its hypnotic power, such as that seen in the jumble of colorful homes here.
Farther down the hillside, the city center features Colonial architecture of green or pink sandstone dating to an 18th-century mining boom. For a time, Guanajuato was the center of the global silver trade, and some of that fortune went into grand mercantile buildings and churches. The city’s sprawling beauty is said to have strongly inspired the set design of the box office smash ‘Coco‘.
