Do you have a favorite dress that you want to keep looking its best formal dresses ? Maybe you want to store your clothing carefully because you’re thinking about reselling it. Or maybe you bought a formal gown early on and want to make sure it stays in perfect condition until you’re ready to wear it.
Whatever your reason, here are the top 10 tips for properly caring for your formalwear and storing your dresses.
1. Wash old dresses
Have you worn this gown at a past event, or are you shopping for a used gown? Professional cleaning is the best way to care for your gown between uses. Fix any rips, holes, loose stitches or frays before they get worse the next time you wear them.
2. Avoid creases or folds
Laying your skirt flat is ideal. If you don’t have that kind of space, use a wide hanger with wide rounded corners. If you must fold it, use acid-free tissue paper between the creases and keep them as loose as possible.
3. Give enough space to formal dresses
Only hang skirts in a closet if you have enough free hanging space. Many times we try to tuck it in the back of the closet and it crumbles and wrinkles over time. If you have a guest closet that no one uses a lot, you might want to put it there.
4. Cover clothes for storage
Whether you want to store your prom dresses for weeks, months, or years, they need to be protected from dust. Use plastic zipper skirt covers to keep out dirt, snags, cobwebs and dust.
5. Consider touch surfaces
Box or bag, the wrong storage container can be detrimental – soiling your beautiful gown. If possible, use a formal dress bag—even if you plan to store your dress in a box. If you do use boxes, use acid-free cardboard and line them with acid-free tissue paper.
6. Let Your Dress Breathe
Unless your clothes are professionally cleaned and vacuum-sealed, you need to keep the air flowing. Wrapping the skirt too tightly can create a musty smell or mildew.
7. Keep the fabric comfortable
Extremely hot spaces such as attics or car trunks can cause certain materials to melt. Beads, sequins, and some fabrics can start to stick when they get very hot. Humidity levels in attics and unfinished basements are rarely regulated, which can also cause damage. Always store your clothing in a temperature-controlled space.
8. Control moths and pests
Moth repellants are really important in some parts of the country. The last thing you want is mice or moths (or whatever) ruining your clothes. Know your local pests and make sure you know how to get rid of them! Just make sure you’re not using too strong of a scent, though, or you might smell like insect repellant the next time you want to wear a prom dress.
9. Protect fabric from light
Over time, sunlight can fade fabrics and damage dresses. Ideally, you can store the skirt in a dark room away from light and protect it with a plastic bag or skirt box.
10. Prepare your stored gowns before wearing
Don’t expect to take your dress out of the closet and wear it to a big event if it’s been in storage for a few months. Give the garment time to dry and make sure it is wrinkle-free. Get your clothes out a few days before the big event and try them on to see if they fit. If you must use insect repellent, you may want to plan for a professional cleaning.
