With the no. 19 overall pick for the 2013 Madden 23 coins draft, the New York Giants selected Syracuse Orange offensive tackle Justin Pugh. Pugh is the top. 57-rated player in the SBN’s Dan Kadar and the sixth-rated offensive tackle.
Pugh, 22. was a three-year player at the left side of Syracuse and was awarded all-conference honors in each of the seasons. After missing his all of the freshman seasons, Pugh only had one season of eligibility remaining, but elected to enter into the 2013 Madden NFL 23 Draft as a player with an education already completed.
With a variety of positions at risk on the offensive line, Pugh has an opportunity to start in his debut season. David Diehl needs to be upgraded as a right tackle however, Pugh is an extremely versatile lineman, and can change positions on the offensive line in front of.
A scouting report was issued on Gang Green Nation, the following were listed as positives of Pugh:
Exceptional pass protector who has an excellent balance, and can manage to mimic pass-rushers in order to keep them away from the backfield. Excellent hands that he sets and re-sets if rocked, sinks his hips to counter power moves, and never gets beaten off the line. His pass protection is among the top in the nation. The player has great power when blocking and works well in the air, has great control and balance. He can also use his initial surge to push back defenders, adept at lateralization to seal from the edges. Performs at the next level and plays until the whistle. Excellent blitz recognition and his coaches have commented how he picks up the block schemes quickly. The blocks are finished and he shows an ability to endure and is a strong player that will make him a great prospect for either the left tackle and right tackle positions.
Although he was a skilled left tackle at Syracuse but his smaller arms and less than stellar performance in the 2013 Senior Bowl have led many to project Pugh to move inside and play guard. Also concerning was a shoulder operation that forced Pugh to miss the first two games for the year. However, if both of those surgeries go well, Pugh has plenty of potential and can be just as good as offensive tackle in this draft class.
